The constantly changing weather in Mumbai has got to me again. It’s been two days I am down with flu unable to stop sneezing and do anything productive. But the positive side of it is that I am being pampered at home with some really good comfort food.
One of the comfort foods that deserves a special mention is my mother’s Yellow Moong Dal. It is so simple and yet so warming and delicious. It definitely gives Chicken Soup a tough competition. I polish off a good bowl or two of it before every meal.
Recipe (makes about 2 bowls)
Ingredients
1/2 cupYellow Moong Dal
Water
1 tbspn Oil
1/2 tspn Cumin Seeds
Pinch of Turmeric Powder
1 Green chilli, slit
Salt, to taste
Fresh Coriander for garnishing
Method
1. Wash the yellow moong dal and soak it in water for an hour.
2. Drain the water from the dal, put the dal in a pressure cooker, cover it with water (about 1 cup) and cook it for 3 whistles on medium heat.
3. Once the dal is cooked, mash it well.
4. In a pan, heat the oil on medium heat. Add cumin seeds to the hot oil.
5. Once the cumin seeds start spluttering, add the turmeric powder. Throw in the mashed dal and the slit green chili. Add salt to taste.
6. Add another 1/2 to 1 cup water, depending on how thin you want the dal to be. Cook for another 5 minutes.
7. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot. (I like to have it by itself but it goes well with plain, steamed rice too.)
